Family Traits Within Sexually Abusive Parents

 
Discipline Father often rigid, strict disciplinarian in home. Often outside of home, not so at all.
Emotional Response Abusive Father: Sometimes very loving; sometimes very punitive. Mother in incestuous family: Often knows of abuse and does not intervene; misture of guilt adn jealousy of daughter.
Supervision Often possessive, restrictive and jealous of potential boyfriends
Outside Criticism Often whole family (including mothers and siblings) very defensive of father
Social Isolation Parents (father especially) try to socially isolate child
Corporal Punishment May or may not be used (compounds effect when it is used)
Socioeconomic Status Middle class as average; with tilt toward upper end. Occurs in all status
Affection Father may display with abuse or may abuse punitively. Mother often doesn't.

Facts
Abusers are strangers
75-85% are known to the child; over 40% are in the family.
Abusers are always adults
About 1/3 of abusers are teenagers.
Abusers are unmarried or sexually frustrated
Most are married or have a regular sexual outlet available to them.
Abusers show obvious appearance
They are most often nice in manner.
Abusers are below-average in intelligence
Convicted offenders have average IQ's
Abusers are homosexuals
Abusers who choose boys often choose girls as well and are not interested in adult males.
Abuse is usually in the form of a violent attack
Under 5% of abuse in the form of violent attack; it is most often carried out with bribes and threats or implied threats.
Abuse usually involves intercourse
Most child sexual abuse involved genital fondling or oral/genital contact without penile penetration.
Sexual contact short of intercourse has no serious effect.
Studies have found sexual contact with or without intercourse may have long-term serious effect psychological effects.
Abuse usually happens as one incident
It is usually a series of events over a period of months or years.
Abuse usually happens in a public place like a park
The most common locations are the victim's home and the abuser's home.
Victims bring on the abuse
The responsibility for the sexual abuse must always lie with the adult or adolescent offender.
